Oberthur Technologies has signed the Global Compact, founded in 2000 by the United Nations. The objective of the Compact is to reconcile economic development with ethical and moral principles.
Oberthur Technologies’ strategy is to implement a group-wide program by which the company emphasizes its dedication to fulfilling its environmental and social responsibilities.
Examples of commitments are:
- Reduce resource use and carbon footprint
- Reduce use of solvents, eliminate solvent based inks and reduce non-hazardous landfill waste
- Ensure that legal and regulatory requirements are met and adopt recognized environmentally-friendly best practices.
- Implement an Environmental Management System by achieving ISO14001 at manufacturing sites
- Establish Environmental Risk Management
- Provide an innovative approach to development of alternative technologies, materials and products
Highlights of recent achievements
- The Los Angeles, USA site is actively seeking substitution of its use of solvent based inks, washes and mixers to reduce overall VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions.
- The Shenzhen site in China has had continuous, site-based objectives to reduce reject rates in its embedding and personalization departments for the last two years, with a 2008 objective to reduce rejects to 0.4% in both departments.
- The Barcelona site in Spain has established procedures to ensure it achieves compliance with all relevant local environmental legislation.
- 10 % reduction in waste going to landfill in 2007 compared to 2006, though improved waste stream segregation at the Exton, USA site.
- The production facility in Strängnäs, Sweden is accredited with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.
- >90 % success rate of potentially recyclable material at the Tewksbury, UK site. Target to reduce VOCs from its printing department by 50% in 2008.
